I was recently reminiscing about some of the nicknames I’ve acquired over the years. I love the idea of nicknames, and some of these really make me laugh.
Mickey - Not sure how it started, but it’s the first name I remember using, through maybe 3rd grade. My grandma continued to call me this until she died.
Mackey - My uncle Patrick’s version, starting perhaps as a parody of how I said my name as a child.
Biggy - What my mom began calling me after I informed her that I was too big to be called “my little guy” any longer, a variation on “my big guy.”
Cavity - What my brother started calling me after we visited the dentist.
Walter - A nickname I obtained at Bible camp, after performing a parody of a song called “Water and Blood” by A.V.B., which we had heard at a church youth rally (A friend started calling himself Blood, followed by another who decided he should be called And).
Mike - This creation was used unfailingly by various high school gym teachers, for whatever reason.
Micolas - One of my favorite nicknames, as used by a good friend.
Mr. Response - Another friend’s name for me, after I helped form a post-college email circle named “Semi-Automated Response.”
Fishkite - After my old website, named for an obnoxious poem I wrote.
Dear - The only pet name that Alison and I could agree upon, after rejecting more sappy nicknames such as Baby, Honey, Sweety, etc. Our mutual name has evolved into “Deary-poo.”
Michael - My nickname at work, which conveniently also appears on my driver’s license. Around the time I started there, I was experimenting with using it because of its religious meaning. But it took me several weeks until I remembered that I was supposed to respond when my boss called it out.
Your turn to spill; what are some of your nicknames?

I can’t believe you didn’t title this post “Micknames.” :)
Suz sometimes calls me Jase (or jAce?). I’m not sure if that counts as a full-fledged nickname or just a “for-short.”

“Fref” by my step-dad.
“Mr. McGoo” by my father because I once had a pediatrician who thought I looked like the cartoon character.
“Hollywood” My nickname in the police academy in reference to my former career.

I have several pet names for Jackson, but my favorite is…”Bugs Bunny” which evolved from the combination of two other pet names, “Love BUG” + “Honey BUNNY” = BUGS BUNNY! I had even made up a bugs bunny song, isn’t that what mommy’s do???? ;)

My favorite is “Daddy”.
“Nommy”: I believe this one is also attributed to Uncle Pat, and is based on how Mackey pronounced my name as a toddler.
“Tommy Joe”: My most hated of all nicknames. It took me all of elementary school and most of middle school to shake it.
“Tommy”: My second-most hated. A stepping stone between Tommy Joe and Tom.
“TJ”: I tried (unsuccessfully) to launch this one myself during the Tommy Joe phase. It never caught on.
“Batman”: My first online handle; used on a BBS that I ran on a Commodore 64 in the late 80s/early 90s.
“The Burglar”: My second online handle. My BBS changed from the Batcave to the Burglar’s Hideout. This was in response to my juvenile brush with the law. As far as I know I’m still banned from shopping at Richman Gordman’s.
“Mother”: My Ninja codename. The Ninjas were a group of 5 or 6 friends at Harding that would sneak out after curfew and rappel off of various buildings on the Harding campus. Taken from Dan Aykroyd’s name in the movie Sneakers.
“Private Get-Your-Ass-Out-Of-Bed”: What my friends at Harding suggested my drill sergeants would name me in Basic Training. Based on the DS in Full Metal Jacket and the Phil Hartman parody of that movie on SNL.
“yankeestom”: Current online persona and Xbox Live gamertag.
“Popfly”: My Memphis Liar name, given by Mick. In reference to the other online -flys, and my interest in baseball.

I do have a lot of nicknames.
“Neo-Confederate” from none other than Mick Wright.
“Goodie” from my great uncle that was killed on Iwo Jima. My middle name is Goodman doesn’t fit does it?
“Farley” from my friends and my wife’s family
“Hero” also from Mick Wright.
“White Supremist” from Thaddeus Matthews. Note that I did not spell it correctly because Thaddeus doesn’t call me by the correct term of “White Supremacist.”
“Fat Nazi” by someone on Thaddeus’ blog.
The list goes on and on. I still am in awe of your Wendi C. Thomas post.
